The state of Florida, with over 21 million people, is the third most populous state in the United States. Surprisingly, none of the cities in this state have populations over one million, but some come very close. The most populous city is Jacksonville, which had over 800,000 residents as of 2016. The next most populous city, Miami, has roughly half that population, clocking in at over 441,000 people. Including Miami and Jacksonville, Florida has a total of 22 cities with populations that exceed 100,000. An additional 145 cities have populations that fall between 10,000 and 100,000.
In total, there are 410 incorporated municipalities throughout the state of Florida, including cities, towns and villages. There is a total of 67 counties, and of these counties, 66 have their own county governments. Jacksonville is not included in this count because it has a consolidated city-county government. Most of the larger cities use mayor-council governments. Of the incorporated areas, there are a total of six that have populations less than 100. The smallest population can be found at Orange County’s Lake Buena Vista, with an estimated population of just 10 people.
